The Basilisk is Paul's first short story collection, published exclusively by Hermit Crab Press. Six short stories explore, in different ways, the spiritual and mystical realities that seem to lie just behind the world of the everyday. Across landscapes and timescapes from revolutionary Russia to the Irish Burren, from Cumbrian estuaries to the plains of Wiltshire, The Basilisk is a book of transformations. Hares who become women; fairies who inhabit machines; spirits who dance in the tidal bores; the Kingdom of God, hiding in the trees.

“Kingsnorth’s style is a kind of ancient modernism, and he’s really the only writer doing anything like it”
